Tax Specific Software Flexible for the Modern Day Firm

I got into TaxDome the end of 2020/2021. My company was getting to a point where our old systems weren't going to enable us to scale, so we were looking for a more inclusive option. I came across TaxDome from someone who had a course on making tax season easier, and when she shared the Workflows and Pipelines, I was sold. TaxDome has been the backbone of our tax season for the past few years.

Pros

I love most the customizability of TaxDome and that it is Tax Specific based portal software with space to add in Advisory.

Cons

They've gotten pretty big, so I feel less connected to their team.

TaxDome Review

2025 will be our 5th tax season using TaxDome. The first couple of years, we just used it for contact info, the client portal and e-signatures, with limited use of the workflows. Last year was the first year we started automating some of the processes, and making full use of the workflows. Still don't have full commitment of all of the members of our company.

Pros

I like that I have all the client information in one place, and have access to it from the app. This way client contact information travels with me. I also like the automation of information that goes out to the client, to keep the updated on the progress of their return.

Cons

Learning curve can be a little steep, especially with setting up the workflows, and understanding how workflows, tasks, and jobs are related. Costs could be an issue with large firms.

Useful App

When the software works, it's great. There's a steep learning curve, but it has a lot of great features which help efficiency and automation.

Pros

We like using the pipelines - they really help automate the process and allow us not to miss deadlines/tasks. Firm templates are very good too. Lots of workarounds so many different ways of doing things which is a good back up for when there are glitches.

Cons

1. There should be filters for templates.
2. There are too many glitches which we don't know about. Since we don't know about them, we can't mitigate them. It impacts are performance vis a vis our clients and creates huge inefficiencies.

Best Virtual Accounting Firm CRM

It has been a great experience. It was challenging at first and I still don't 100% understand how to do certain things with pipelines (maybe I need it to do something that isn't possible). Overall, I'm very pleased.

Pros

I've been using TaxDome since 2021 (4 tax seasons). I didn't fully utilize all of the features during my first 2 years, and I still have more pipelines to set up, however, I have still been very pleased. This software can do as much or as little as you need based on your firm needs. I especially love that I can lock documents until the invoice is paid. This feature was a lifesaver! TaxDome is also continuously adding new features and improving on the old ones. I highly recommend TaxDome, especially if you are a virtual firm or hoping to move in that direction.

Cons

I would love to have automated replies when I'm out of the office. I would love a white label app (which I think is in the works). I'd also like to be able to offer more payment options. I invoice all tax returns through TaxDome, but everything else is invoiced through QBO because fees are somewhat less. Syncing my TaxDome to my QBO created a mess. I'd be afraid to attempt that again, but I'd possibly consider it if it was more seamless.

Best Employee Ever

I enjoy TD a ton. It has been easy to get my clients to adopt overall and has saved me time enough to put off hiring additional help.

Pros

I like that everything is so centralized. Keeping the client stuff in all one place and being able to see everything at a high level and also more granular helps keep the work managed well.

Cons

I wish we had the ability to connect to more than just QB as an accounting software. Also I wish we could have more ability to use additional filtering in automations.

Great, Professional CRM (and lots more) which replaces a lot of other tools

It was a rough start in 2020 when we started using it. It has improved in many ways, and we have learned to navigate and integrate it in many ways, Overall 95% of are clients interact with us using TaxDome and about half use the mobile app.

Pros

Replaces many tools (document sharing, email, e-signature, payments, etc.) into one place. White labeling, Ability to send multiple clients the same email with short names at one time.

Cons

Lack of customization (colors, client interface, etc.). E-mails go out showing the name.taxdome.com rather than the custom domain. Inability to create a direct from home screen login, no option to require clients to use 2-FA.

Docusign was mor eof an esignature and payment portal only. Did not provide near as many features.

TaxDome Excellent Software no matter the size of your organization

My overall experience with TaxDome has been quite positive. While I only use a very small fraction of the capabilities of the program, I am quite happy with the functions I do use.

Pros

Makes running a small practice more efficient without a huge price tag

Cons

The invoicing module is sub-par, very limited in what you can do, and does not have a professional look like QBO.

My overall experience over the years has been 10/10, highly recommend

The ability to discuss upgrades. The service, online tutorials and upgrades to the mobile app.

We can sign documents , pull transcripts, upload documents, schedule appointments

Cons

We wish we could monthly payments. Also the price to add additional users or admin makes it more expensive for a solo proneur.

Everything You Need in One Place!

I have been with TD for at least 3 years now. Being able to invoice, provide documents and request e-signature, as well as store all information (with or without client access) is a game-changer for my firm.

Pros

Linking invoice to document to be paid before client has access to documents

Cons

I would love to have a button within the client's portal to initiate a scan for upload to the portal. Right now I have to scan a document to a file on my computer then initiate the upload.

Perfect for the full service firm.

It has saved my bacon more time than I can count because it manages projects and keeps 95% of client communications in the platform, allowing the team to see and access each client's info anytime.

Pros

It's as close to an all-in-one solution as I can find. While it is great for taxes it is also great for bookkeeping, payroll, and monthly services.

Cons

I wish you could port your existing phone number into the system.

Converting to Tax Dome - a user's experience

While the setup for the various features of the program has taken a bit longer than expected the experience as we and our clients begin to utilize the program has been positive. Those clients that have utilized the program so far have indicated a much higher satisfaction and intuitive use of the program compared to our prior web portal, document management program.

Pros

The combination of web portal with a built-in client scanner, document management, workflow management, client communications, client billings and electronic signature combines all of the necessary features required for a modern electronic or virtual tax or accounting based practice.

Cons

The program is such a large sandbox, it would have been more efficiently incorporated into our practice if a structured and required training program was included with the subscription.

Client for I believe 4 years now. Overall satisfied.

Pros

I like the flexibility of document exchanges and conversations with clients.

Cons

The training needs to be more robust. Also, I think the SMS system was oversold, and should be included in the package not as an additional subscription.

Fantastic! Real solution thats multi-featured for accounting firms

Fantastic! Highly supported program that is constantly being updated and improved based on actual user feedback. Use it daily in my business and honestly would need 12 programs to replace all the things it does for me and my team.

Pros

Has multiple features in one software so not constantly logging in, or updating integrations with other platforms. Also saves on cost by having one integrated system for 99% of what my accounting firm needs. Clients also give great feedback on ease of use and having everything in one place.

Cons

It is a big software product so feels hard to learn. Like any large business application, reaching out to their support desk and 1:1 whiteglove custom training sessions allows me to setup features I needed for my business in stages without being overwhelmed

Great tool for your practice

Overall it's been a great tool and I'm glad that I chose TaxDome as my client management system for my tax practice.

Pros

Tax Dome is a great product that is constantly making updates that are beneficial to those in the industry. It really has become a solution to minimize having multiple applications and can do most within it.

Cons

Last year, I felt like there were too many changes that weren't fully tested out and lots of bugs. I had issues with the organizer function among some other things. I would like to see more of these issues worked out before giving it to us to use because it impacts our clients experience.

Best in show for CRM and workflow management

Overall, this platform is the best price point for my CRM needs. It takes some time to get familiar with, but with the marketplace, if you're completely new you can just get right into it with a built-for-you workflow.

Pros

Flexibility to create workflows that work for my firm as well as the ability to lock invoices to the returns.

Cons

The site builder. I really want to use it but it's features are VERY clunky. I always have issues with spacing and sizing as I try to re-adjust things. I also dislike when new additions are rolled out in the middle of tax season.

I have used TaxDome for over 3 years and it has helped me grow as my client list and my employee numbers grew. I can't keep it all in my head and I don't have to with TaxDome. I also like knowing my clients' data is safe.

The integration of Secure Document Storage, Secure Communications with my clients as well as being able to use as a CRM.

Lack of Packages in the Engagement Letter/Proposal section.

3 year user of TaxDome - we love it

We are extremely happy with TaxDome (TD). TD listens to it's users and makes adjustments based upon requests. Love that. We bought it at the end of 2021 and have seen changes in the software (for the good) since then.
The true key to it being a success is to constantly use it. Kind of like that piece of exercise equipment in your basement. Don't blame it for you not losing weight if you don't use it. Use TD as much as you can and you'll appreciate the efficiency of what it does.
TD offers a lot and our clients seem to like it. We have about 1,100 client now so it comes in REALLY handy. Like everyone else, we have clients in their 70's, 80's (even 90's) who love it and use it just fine. But we also have clients in their 20's, 30's & 40's who find it "confusing".
Bottom line is do what works for you and your firm. Because the way you process returns is different than me. So don't copy someone else's Workflow but instead create you own!

Pros

that it does things I didn't even know were a good idea. such as locking a tax return to an invoice. Cool!
We also love the Workflows. That feature should be a necessity in every tax preparation firms arsenal.

Cons

Nothing I liked least BUT I will say, for us at least, it was like moving from a small Cessna plane to a Lear Jet. Holy smokes, the bells and whistles and things it can do require time to learn/use it. Point being, you're not gonna be a TaxDome pro the first year. Give it a few years.

TaxDome feedback

Improved efficiency and client satisfaction. Clients like to use the app.

workflow process, communication and document sharing capability, billing and invoicing

Cons

Folder structure is cluttered, makes it very confusing between files shared by client vs. documents shared with client vs. private for any specific tax year. Need to go to three different directories to view files. Would be great if there is an ability to flat the structure by tax year so that I can see all files in a single directory for a specific tax year.
Would be helpful to preload new tax year folder in the beginning of the year. For example, I have to manually create 2024 folders for each client that I am doing 2024 work, such as estimated tax payments, sales tax or payroll tax.
Ability to backup all data from network drive to hard drive. For example, most recently there has been internet outage in my area for almost 24 hours and I was not able to be productive as access to network drive was severed.

TaxDome is the best tax CRM out there.

cant live with it at this point. 2024 is the first year we have a team in taxdome, so trying to figure the optimal way for a team environment

Pros

the automations, pipelines, ease of keeping everything in one place.

Cons

1. Unable to schedule chats. I work odd hours and I have to wait until the morning to send client communication and sometimes I forget. It would be great to schedule chats at a future date similar to scheduling emails.
2. TaxDome Inbox+. right now its mainly just a notification box tailored to one person. It would be great to have a Firm inbox+ and being able to assign tasks directly taxdome inbox to staff.
3. Round robin feature when a job enters a stage in a pipeline. For example "begin tax prep" there are 4 tax preparers its assigned to, but only 1 needs to complete it. Then we have to communicate outside of taxdome to see who is taking the task (client tax prep)

Overall I've been happy with the pricing structure and being able to add and remove users based upon the seasonality of my business. I love the automations and how much manual work has been removed from administrative work.

The game-change my firm was looking for

It has been a real game-changer for my practice and has helped so much with annual tax preparation. I'm also very impressed at how reactive TD is to user requests and all of the improvements released.

Pros

Everything is all in one place! I was able to drop several other apps. The automations for workflow are mind-blowing. I love being able to mass email with filters for targeted clients. I love locking documents to payments and now I have reduced my $45K A/R to $0.

Cons

We are using Keeper to manage our accounting work because I can't get TD to do what I need.

Overall, my experience with TaxDome has been great.

Pros

I like that TaxDome allows for the auto-draft of recurring invoices. I also like that I can organize my chats by topic, allowing me to locate a conversation easily.

Cons

What I like least is that the templates aren't searchable and can't be filtered. I have to scroll through all of them to find what I am looking for. It would also be nice to be able to filter by preferred language.

Great Tool as PMO and Client Portal.

Good fit for our firm. Affordable price and good customer service.

Pros

We use TaxDome as both a PMO tool & Client Portal. The ability to automate tasks and send messages & emails to clients is huge. I also like the client facing options available, for ex. the action updates & client tasks. TaxDome has also been constantly updating & adding new features.

Cons

- Inability to integrate with other apps- through Zapier or otherwise.
-Cannot add packages to proposal
- No option to switch the client option to pay CC fees
-Wish the Organizer was more intuitive and could recognize PY data & sync.

TaxDome for the WIN!

They have been WONDERFUL! All their employees are friendly and knowledgeable, they offer so much training (both in video and in person) and are very transparent with the changes that are coming. They listen to the community and are mindful of tax deadlines when they do make changes.

Pros

Love the secure messaging, printing directly from my tax software to TD, client communication in one place and the automation gave me an "admin" that I desperately needed.

Cons

I wish SMS didn't need a separate phone number (but chat works great) and wish it could integrate with QB payments.

TaxDome is the Best!

The best! I work with many CRM’s for my other businesses and never found one for the accounting industry, TaxDome is what helps me run my firm.

Pros

I love the that we can organize a workflow, add tags, keep up with work. I came from using Keap and Canopy tax, there is nothing like TaxDome. My clients love the portal.

Cons

I don’t find anything I least like, I would just like a few things added, the ability to upload docs into a clients portal from my phone and a bit more automation in the pipelines.

Excellent practice management software

I'm very happy with TaxDome. I needed a secure communication platform with project tracking and KBA e-signatures, and TD has all that and so much more. In fact, I recently switched to a 3 year contract, which should tell you how pleased I am. I highly recommend any CPA firm check out this software!

Pros

I love all of the automation features. It makes my workflow highly customizable and well organized. I always know who has which tasks to complete, and where in the process any given deliverable is. Plus they keep introducing more incredible features, so the product is continually improved.

Cons

There is a bit of a learning curve at the beginning in order to understand how the system works and how to set up your own processes, so I'm still tweaking some of my setup as I get more experience with the product. I also wish they supported foreign currency invoicing (CAD-USD).

Great Program

My overall experience with TaxDome was very good. If I wasn't merging in with a larger firm I would absolutely continue to use it and would highly recommend to anybody that is looking for a firm management software. Customer service is quick to respond and they are constantly making improvements.

Pros

The program is easy to use once you have it setup the way you want it. There are tons of features to make it scalable for almost any size practice. Time tracking, invoicing, cloud storage and more all in one place. It really does make running a practice easier.

Cons

The only negative for me is the amount of time it takes to get it setup the way you want it. Once you do, it's smooth sailing from there.

I love it! It allows me to run my practice efficiently and allows my clients to accomplish everything in one place.

Pros

It has everything you need in one place. There is no need to have additional products, it truly is a full business management product.

Cons

I wish the combine PDF feature wouldn't make you convert the documents to PDF's first. I also wish the PDF editor was a bit more updated, the tools are not easy to use.

The best tax pro all-inclusive tool for 2024

Pros

It's made specifically for tax pros. All the features are thoughtfully designed around optimizing professional tax pro / accountant workflows. This is by far the best all-in-one accounting tool I have used. You can tell the team is putting in work on the tool with new monthly features being shipped every month. This is the opposite of Intuit. You guys are great. TaxDome saved us at least 200 hours of manual work the past tax season.

Cons

Minor things like not having a preset / prefilled client reminder occurrences and frequency.

Excitedly Looking Forward to What They do Next.

My experience was initially rough as my old platform did not accommodate teh transfer of files on taht system to TaxDome. What was impressive was that we could work most of it out with the assistance of TaxDome. I also love that they allow you to pay for multiple years to save a little more as an accountant. We all love to save a little, as this is it.

Pros

The automation and the ability to onboard a new prospect to a paid client, all without any of the team lifting a finger. It is now set up so that if and when we receive payment, we get to work—reducing admin time by at least 20%.

Cons

I can not think of any cons at this time.

So Glad I Started Using TaxDome From Day One

Overall, TaxDome has really helped me streamline my bookkeeping and tax prep. It’s intuitive, secure, and has saved me a ton of time. From automating tasks to securely managing client documents, it’s made my workflow so much smoother. Tax season is always hectic, but with TaxDome, I feel like I have way more control and organization throughout the year.

Pros

The automation and document management features have been huge time-savers. I love that clients can easily upload and sign documents securely—it's made my life a lot easier, especially during tax season. Having everything organized and in one place means I’m not constantly chasing down paperwork, which is a big win for me w both bookkeeping and tax prep.

Cons

For some of my clients who aren’t super tech-savvy, the platform can feel a bit overwhelming at first. It would also be great to see more options for customizing the experience to better suit different clients' needs.

Great Portal, Great Workflows, Great Communication Management Tool

I purchased a client list from someone using TaxDome, and transitioned into using it. I barely used it the first season because I didn't understand it -- and now I love it and feel it contributes to my efficiency and document security in a way that would be impossible without it.

Pros

The ability to keep several methods of communication in one arena -- chats, emails from multiple addresses, etc -- all the while allowing the safe upload and download of documents. The work flows are a great organizational tool.

Cons

The user/fee structure. As a small practitioner, the kind that gets great use from TaxDome, we have users that are not primary, can be occasional - part time bookkeepers, seasonal interns, spousal record upkeep, etc. To charge the same for any new users is not cool -- and it leads to sharing of logins, which is not a safe practice.

Customize TaxDome to Fit Your Process

I love it and recommend it to everyone! The price is reasonable too.

Pros

Customization is the key to make TaxDome work for any size firm. It also has a lot of features, like CRM, document storage, signatures, payment processing - all under one "dome".

Cons

The number of clicks it takes to pull up information or to navigate. Sometimes, clicking a link takes you away from the screen you were on and it's takes too many clicks to get back to where you were originally. TD is improving every day so it's just a matter of time for this to no longer be an issue.

Highly recommend TaxDome!

Very easy to use and happy with the experience! I would highly recommend TaxDome to a practice that wants a seamless, online experience for their clients that also makes it easy for your team to use.

Pros

TaxDome makes it easy for me to run my practice as a small business owner with a not-so-huge budget. It keeps everything in one place to make it easier for my team and my clients, and it's user-friendly so my clients enjoy the experience.

Cons

As a newer company, TaxDome is still figuring out the best way for things to work, so there are sometimes areas that aren't as user-friendly, or need to be improved. BUT... TaxDome is very responsive to this, and not only has an easy way for users to communicate (and up-vote) what needs to be done, but they are constantly working on improving the product.

Tax Dome is very user friendly. It is a one stop shop for tax preparers from start to finish.

Best Decision I Ever Made!

Switching to TaxDome was the best decision I ever made. I was juggling client management, task management and month end closing with four different softwares. TaxDome has allowed me to streamline my process and manage my business and individual clients using one platform.

I don't like not being able to accept partial payments.

Tax Dome #1 CRM recommendation

My experience with tax has been nothing short of amazing. Sure there’s always glitches but their customer service is quick to respond and help you resolve your issues.

Pros

I like the ability to have client information all in one place including documentation and messages. It allows me to see my business in an overview using filters. I just can’t say enough good things about it.

Cons

I think the thing I like least about it is that it doesn’t have a full Adobe PDF editor. The one that is in there has improved, but it is still lacking some features. I wish it integrated with QuickBooks rather than having to choose CPA charge or stripe.

Once you get past the set up, Taxdome is awesome!

Like every app. It has its pros and cons. But overall, Taxdome has been a great addition to our firm

Automations, workflows, Consistent updates and great support

Cons

It takes a long time to set up but once it is set up, it is great. Their email inbox feature is not a true shared inbox. Laking CRM-like timeline and visibility
