Reliable Virtualization Software: vSphere

I love using vSphere because vSphere is widely regarded as one of the most robust and feature-rich virtualization platforms on the market. It excels in creating and managing virtualized environments, offering high performance, scalability, and reliability so my overall experience is 8.5 out of 10.

Pros

vSphere is a virtualization software which is well for its reliability. The most important feature that I love most about this service is that it allows multiple virtual machines (VMs) to run on a single physical server, ensuring hardware resources are fully utilized also it include features like Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) automatically allocate resources based on workload demands.

Cons

I don't face any big issue on using vSphere but I fell it's expensive licensing and subscription costs as well as UI portion can be improved more

Bring back the thick client for Windows

They tried to make it more convenient by forcing everyone to the web version, but they did it too soon. Too slow, buggy, and reliant on old technology. They should have waited until the HTML5 version was fully ready and rolled it out then.

Pros

With esx 6+ you are forced to the web version of vsphere. This does have its conveniences (when it works), and for the most part contains everything in the older thick software client. Managing and access VM's is similar. Installing updates is arguably easier, and vcenter management seems to be more feature filled.

Cons

Where do I start .... first of all, you need to have flash installed and allowed to get the full feature set on the browser. The HTML5 version is great when it works, but very buggy. Also, it is not nearly as responsive as the old software client. For the remote console, you need to install a plugin and software to get that working properly.

-VMotion service to migrate virtual machines in real time is amazing.
-The stability of the system working with clusters is the best option the in the market.
-A lot compatibility with physical storages
-Amazing management to discover datastores created in the physical storages.
-The security updates to fix vulnerabilities are published very quick.
-The dashboard to management our clusters is very easy to see and very light to load a lot of data in the dashboards.
-The upgrades improve the VMware environment with new capabilities in storages and new OS published.

Cons

-Since January 2025 the prices increased in a 600% in the licenses, in others subsidiaries the prices increased around 1000%.
-Now the prices are very expensive.

vSphere was just what was needed to P2V our old legacy kit

A really solid and reliable product that I have been using and deploying for many years. I found it be totally dependable with easy to use GUI's, plenty of online docs and a very good support and technical service.

Pros

I found vSphere to be the complete package suppling a bare metal hypervisor, a management appliance (vCenter) and many greats tools that allowed my to P2V many monolithic servers.

Cons

There is a substantial cost involved as ESXi and vCenter licences are needed. These have increased following takeover from Broadcom. There are open source options available but without the support wrapper that VMWare provides.

Big changes on new Vsphere 6.7

Have been on the technology field for over a decade by now working with a lot of different virtualization technologies, by far this is one of the most reliable and easy to use out there.
Have seem some weird issues with another virtualization technologies but vsphere always had a lot of redundancy to prevent the production going down once you have configured it correctly.

Pros

- Stylish new look.
- Better performance than previous versions.
- Lots of support for security bridges not supported on previous version and hardware compatibility with new products and software.

Cons

- User interface is annoying sometimes.
Mostly this is one of the huge concerns for me on this new version, If i want to see the running task there are a lot of widget on the screen and need to zoom out the view to see some of the running task, or the alerts, then zoom in to read it correctly and zoom it out to see them again, is a little annoying for me but well it works... For anything else is pretty good.

Virtualization of computers in a centralized setup. Being able to manage multiple servers from basically one server computer

Pros

It is very easy to spin out a VM when needed. Having a good backup makes a big difference when having to restore a VM to a previous version. Easy to manage VM's .When support is needed, they are extremely good about it and very helpful to teach what happened and how to avoid it in the future

Cons

We believe vSphere has the tools so far to manage a business from a virtual stand point. We haven't come across a situation where we wish the software had a specific tool or feature to make something go easy.

The best virtualizing solution

Vmware’s vSphere is one of those products that you despite its cost you will never feel like you made a bad investment buying. It gives me so many options when it comes to remote management of all the software I have running within the local ecosystem. What was really impressive was how we were able to demo newer enterprise software within a control environment giving us a perspective that we would have never had given the old software that was present. With the recent Corvid outbreak, we were actually able to implement VPNs and grant remote access without having to invest in new hardware.

Pros

Stability and scaling were very important to me when choosing a solution to my problems. One of my clients had an old ERP software connected to an equally old version of SQL server. Pressed to upgrade and incorporate newer cloud base services I had to find something that could be used in the interim but could be shaped slowly to match our needs. I chose vSphere and it worked out very well. Having something that remote workers could access, that was stable and secure meant we able to weather the storm. The ESXi is easy to access as it is web based. Now I run all our servers on VMWare with an integrated remote cloud service for backup. Just the ability to preserve data stored in the vintage ERP alone was worth the cost.

Cons

While the ESXi is easy to access its can be confusing at first. Its hard to focus on what you need to see as the interface is very cluttered. Also, Hardware requirements and licensing can be taxing. While it was critical to protect our data no matter the cost the costing and implementation still felt a bit excessive. There is also huge learning curve when it comes to using some of vSphere’s functions When incorporating it into your on-site datacenter you will definitely need to train your staff or hire an expert cloud technician to monitor and manage your cloud services.

Features like HA, DRS, Virtual Switch makes its best available virtualization solution available.

Pros

1.) User friendly web interface, easy options to browse and work on.
2.) Deployment is easy as well as all components are contained within vsphere appliance like PSC, VAMI, Database.
3.) Robust and can be easily integrated with third party applications and plugins like NetApp, EMC etc.
4.)Update manager is also integrated which cn be used to upgrade associated ESXi hosts, and components.
5.) Appliance updates are available over VAMI, thus no need to deploy patches seperately.

Cons

I like the flash version of web interface which was removed in recent version, other that that I believe it's perfect.

Easy & Simplistic to use, yet full of features that make management of virtual machines easy

Pros

Ease of access to manage virtual machines. vSphere allows for you to easily manage your entire Virtual Infrastructure, from the Data Storage used to house the VMs to the creation and management of the Virtual Machines themselves. Clone, Deploy, and Configure multiple VMs within minutes... You can stand up an entire infrastructure composed of virtual machines within a short time (depending on available resources) using vSphere

Cons

There can be a slight learning curve for anyone who has not managed a virtual environment. VMware vSphere has numerous functions, features, and capabilities and it can at times seem overwhelming; however, VMware provides great articles and knowledge bases to help even the most novice administrator become a vSphere power user.

Since more than a decade, vsphere has brought virtualization into almost every shop on earth and changed the way the IT departments administer their infrastructure, making it way more flexible, easier, faster and smarter.

Cons

Perfect for hosting private clouds on-prem

Largley positive, but when there is an incident affecting the entire cluster, you can expect to have a bad day. For example if there are locking issues within the cluster against a fibre-channel storage array, you may need to reboot the entire cluster resulting in an outage of 100% of all infrastructure on the platform.

Pros

The web UI makes it very easy to manage ESXi hosts and their configuration, as well as individual VM configuration. It is simple to setup an HA toplogy with numerous VMs running on a cluster of ESXi (hypervisor) hosts. DRS makes it simple to automatically migrate VMs between hosts in a cluster.

Cons

The licencing of features is complex, and base level licences preclude feature such as storage vMotion and DRS. This should be part of the base offering.
The vSphere API is a bit clunky and the SDKs available in python are quire fragmented. No infrastructure as code offerings are made as all configuration is generally done manually by clicking the mouse, or via manual CLI commands.

Manage big virtual environment!

I enjoy using vSphere every day to connect to my virtual environment. This makes my job easier when testing application security because I can run tests on multiple machines and in multiple configurations at the same time.

Pros

I really like the reliability of vSphere. It's hard for me to remember situations when I had a problem connecting to the virtual environment or when it was unstable. Working with virtual machines and their configuration is very simple. Restoring machines to their initial state or reconfiguring them takes little time and you can focus on their effective use.

Cons

VmWare vSphere is the best

I use Vsphere daily to manage Virtual Environments. I like the interface, clean, intuitive and easy to use

Pros

Vsphere is a must when you manage Virtual Machines / Storage and their environment.
Fro the Vsphere Client Dashboard you can see all your VM, the storages and for every VM you can create/delete a new one, change the settings, do some actions such as reboot, power on/off, take (and revert) snapshots, move the VM to another node/storage, just to tell some actions you could do.
Obviously you can connect to selected VM (without the need of using RDP or SSH for example).
There is a lot of documentation on internet if you need information or support.

Cons

it seems the price will increase a lot for Italy customers

A great virtualization platform for organizations with all sizes

We use vSphere for both production and non-production applications. vSphere brings the cloud to on-premises for us.

Pros

A great virtualization platform to optimize resources between cloud and on-premises.

Cons

The cost is unreasonable high. It should provide various licensing levels for the users.

Virtualization utility for cloud virtualization over WMware technology

Nice tool with modern UI and dashboard to provide configuration opportunities and monitoring across all virtualized servers.

Pros

vSphere is utility which provides UI and API layer for WMware cloud virtualization tool. It provides configuration interface for your vApps. You are also allowed to view everything in cloud in main dashboard. In any problems there is a utility to show the console right in the server to fix the problems. You can manage permissions list and resouces to organizations.

Cons

A bit difficult interface with lots of options and configuration. It can't be easy to set up when someone doesn't have required experience in WMware technology.

VMware VSphere: A Virtualization Server for Private Clouds

It was great working with VSphere to simplify the management and deployment of clients. By employing it all the VM creation, deployment, and processing is done on the server side and all the client is responsible of is providing the VM display more or less.

Pros

I deployed VSphere in my networking class to provide the students with managed VMs containing common software packages and tools. VSphere was up to the challenge using a commodity Dell Intel server with 64 GB RAM. It provided virtualization support to 22 VSphere clients. The clients merely provided the VM display and all the processing is done on the server side. The control center for managing the virtual machines is extremely simple to use and the migration (using VMware VMotion) is also seamless. The next step for us is to start testing network virtualization using the VMware NSX server.

Cons

The client software hangs and lags unexpectedly. As a developer, I sense that the VSphere client could be better enhanced in terms of performance as well as in the look and feel.

Alternatives Considered

VMware NSX

Reasons for Choosing vSphere

Centralization of the virtualization operations.

Pros

vSphere is a robust virtualization platform offered by VMware, and there are several standout aspects about it that users often appreciate. Some of the features I find most notable about vSphere are Enterprise-Grade Virtualization and vMotion

Cons

some of the common pain points or challenges associated with vSphere are cost, complex pricing model and steep learning curve

Use vSphere to manage our virtual machines and works better after we migrate from physical...

Reduced cost of the physical hardware used, from 24 host to 4, reduced cost of spare parts for all of them, also reduced the heat of all in the room, getting low consumption of electricity. Getting a good improvement of this servers for our department and the company.

Pros

vSphere is easy to use, got physical servers and migrated to a virtual environment got better to manage them and better performance

Cons

It was a little complicated to configure all the environment, from the internal network switch, storage and all the stuff to have the best practices completed.

Reasons for Switching to vSphere

The very best Windows Server virtualizing tool!

The software is extremely powerful and reliable, just the learning curve is very steep for new comers.

Pros

A ton of features to install and manage the virtual machines over multiple physical servers through vCentre.

Cons

More easily accessible and freely available training materials will be beneficial. Everything is heavily priced out of common man's reach.
