Using OpenPhone to always stay connected

In my two years of using OpenPhone, I have never felt the need to replace this app because it has pretty much everything I need in a calling app.

Pros

The interface of both the PC and mobile version are very smooth and user friendly.

Cons

Whenever an update occurs, there is usually a minor inconvenience that comes along with it. Something like call logs not getting updated, or the app itself taken too long to update.

Great VOIP product for small businesses

Pros

The flexible platform allows me to use the service on my desktop or my phone, allowing me to take these phone calls to our business line where ever I might be. Currently, Openphone allows me to SMS clients in Canada. Google Voice, which was the main alternative does not have this feature.

Cons

They charge for each user and add a new line for each user even if all you need is to have multiple users managing one line.

Alternatives Considered

Google Voice

Reasons for Switching to OpenPhone

Google voice did not support sending SMS messages for clients in Canada.

THE PLATFORM/COMPANY IS UNRELIABLE

If you want a reliable long term platform, this isn't the one. They will shut you down in a heartbeat based on speculation. Customer service/retention means nothing to this company at all. I set it up for business use to contact and follow up with my customers however, that only lasted less than 2 days. Don't be fooled by the price, you pay for what you get. I wouldn't recommend this platform to my worst enemy...IT ABSOLUTELY SUCKS!!!!

Pros

The price is what attracted me. The ease of sending messages was good while it worked.

Cons

Customer service is non existent as well.

Valuable Resource for Small Business

I have been very happy with OpenPhone overall. It has provided the customization features my business needs without extras that were outside of the budget as a new startup.

Pros

Easy to use, has a great feature set for the price point. It has been incredibly valuable in setting up a professional business phone service for a very small business.

Cons

Occasional connectivity issues, I am not really sure what the cause is and it has been infrequent enough that I haven't looked deeply into the problem. There isn't great personalized customer service, however it is user-friendly and they have excellent online resources so I haven't missed it.

Love this phone app!

Pros

I love many things - it works wonderfully, hardly ever a glitch! Customer service is great. Love that I can see texts, phone calls and voice mails from customers all in one spot!Anyone on my team can log into open phone from their device and make a call/respond to the customer from the app.

Cons

There is only one con. Once in a while, I run into a glitch where I want to enter this number into documents, but the phone number is not recognized as real phone number, so I have to put my personal number....so it's great as the forward facing phone number for customers for my business, but I have to use my personal number for certain administrative accounts.

An awesome business phone and SMS Solution for today's mobile driven world.

OpenPhone is a business phone and SMS solution designed specifically to make communication easier for small businesses owners and their teams. It offers a wide range of features that are tailored to meet the needs of entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, freelancers, and other small teams without unnecessary friction or feature bloat . With OpenPhone, you can make and receive calls, send and receive text messages, and even schedule messages to be sent at a later date. I love that it lets me share my phone number with customers without revealing my personal cell phone. Plus, OpenPhone offers a simple, straightforward pricing structure that makes it an ideal choice for businesses on a budget. Works awesome with my iphone.

Pros

OpenPhone is one piece of my business toolkit that I simply cannot be without. I own and manage two small businesses and was finding giving out my personal number unmanageable as I didn't know who was calling me and for what purpose. Having a dedicated local number that I can tie to my business in google maps, facebook, and my websites was a huge piece of my business toolkit. Openphone has been amazing.

Cons

There have been a few service outages in the time I have been a customer, but the openphone team has been responsive about action taken, and have communicated well though it all. All have been resolved in a timely fashion.

Do NOT waste your time or business with OpenPhone - I've lost a lot of money

I have lost business while using OpenPhone since calls cannot be actually answered (they are automatically disconnected). I thought maybe they had an automatic robo detector but turns out, their system just doesn't work.
I have had family members trying to call that have to email us because they cannot call or text.
I honestly don't know how they can do this to businesses.

Pros

Nothing works and IT keeps asking me to waste a ton of time to help them figure it out.

Cons

Syncing doesn't work - EVER. I have numerous screenshots and have sent them to IT. They keep asking for more details but seeing as how I'm trying to run a business, it's hard to track everything over and over again to help them figure it out.
I don't receive calls and am not able to make calls. The phone rings (sometimes), I pick up and it automatically disconnects me. IT again, wanted me to give them phone numbers, times, etc. AND wanted to put some tracer on my phone. I don't think so. After months of begging for a better outcome, nothing has changed.

Alternatives Considered

8x8 Work, Dialpad and RingCentral Video

Reasons for Choosing OpenPhone

Google voice quality on calls is less than desirable. OpenPhone has better call quality (IF you can get and stay on a call). But I had zero issues with GV syncing and actually receiving text messages, etc.

Reasons for Switching to OpenPhone

Not recommended

Worst onboarding and support experience ever!
If you expect to just sign up and immediately get going - forget about it...

I've been trying to speak with someone on OpenPhone who can get our account approved asap for outbound messages.

We've applied twice and failed and cannot get any concrete information as for why.

They have no phone number where I can reach support, nor do they have a human chat and I'm very disappointed as a customer.

Pros

Initially looked very promising but... not all that glitters is gold

Cons

Unable to use the outbound messaging to to lack of support availability - wasted tons of time trying to reach them and getting help

OpenPhone works for my business

It simplifies the issue with phone lines and virtual coverage. Makes life easier.

Pros

It works very well and can be configured in many different ways. This software also records the call and sends text messages. You can setup a time when you want the system to start so you can be covered when unable to get to the phone.

Cons

Some areas takes some research to get right.

Pray you don’t have a power outage

Pros

The idea of not having a handheld phone and answering calls from home.

Cons

Runs on internet so if your internet goes down, you can’t receive or make calls. Also, some employees would rather have a handheld phone but it’s not an option. Only a headset.

Response from OpenPhone Technologies

Hi Lindsay, thanks for your review, we appreciate you taking the time out.

I noted that you mentioned not being able to use our service if your internet/power goes down.

OpenPhone is also available on your phone or tablet (iOS/Android). You just need to download the app from the app store or visit https://www.openphone.com/downloads. That way, you can have access to OpenPhone whenever you need to.

Hope that helps!

Great app to call to the US from abroad, noise is crisp and clear and would definitely recommend for business use!

Pros

Cons

Maybe more discount packages if you’re a long term user

Best Business Phone Ever!

My experience with OpenPhone is really awesome. I use this every day to communicate with my prospects and clients. I always keep this in my arsenal. Their mobile app is too good and user friendly plus UI looks too good. You can do everything from their mobile like calls, sms, and voicemails and the most interesting part is their snippets feature.

Pros

This is my daily use business phone. I use OpenPhone to call and text my prospects and clients and this is a very helpful solution that I found on the Internet because when it comes to features there's no other software provided at this price. Their support is too fast like lightning speed, and they respond too quickly whenever you have a problem. OpenPhone gives you everything you need to start a business from scratch like calls, text messages, sending voicemails, voicemail transcriptions, call forwarding, round-robin and you can also add new numbers. Incredible app!

Cons

There's nothing to dislike about OpenPhone but it would be very helpful for sales if they provide a power dialer. This will save a lot of time, no doubt. But still, I love this app.

Constant Problems and Unresponsive Customer Support

Great potential, awful customer support and product doesn't deliver.

Pros

They have all the right features, in a decent UI

Cons

Core features don't work. They have a bug in their call routing that kept calls from coming to my team until I figured out a way to work around it. There is a bug "upstream at a carrier" that is preventing us from sending sms/mms from our core phone number. They failed to mention this prior to us porting our number into their system. Now we're stuck, but it's been weeks with no movement.

Cons

The recent change of charging extra for texts and the increase in subscription are just a few factors that went against it.

OpenPhone is difficult to integrate with anything

My overall experience with OpenPhone wasn't the greatest. Their customer service was always there to help but there just wasn't a lot they could do

Pros

I don't have that many pros during my time using OpenPhone. I can say that their customer service was always there to help even though there was not a lot of solutions that could be applied

Cons

Their mobile app constantly failed, we had more call drops than we've ever had before, and every time we called in trying to get something fixed they tried charging us each and every time

Not ready for mainstream

I wanted a phone system that can be used by a distributed team with phone, sms, mms capabilities. Sadly the poor call quality is rendering this product a 'looks good but it is far from good'.

Pros

Good user interface. Ability to manage several lines from a central location. A lot of common sense features.

Cons

Call quality is terrible on mobile devices, whether you are on wifi or data. If on data, unless you have full bars don't bother answering the phone. The SMS replies do not appear to be working properly. We have some programmed for when the customer has left a voice mail and some for missed calls. The caller receives 2 text messages when they leave a message. This seems like an easy thing to fix. We regularly experience an issue where the phone randomly switches from the headset to the speaker or phone and are unable to switch back. Tech support more or less told us that there is nothing they can do, but that they have forwarded the issue to their engineering team, but there is no timeline of when it would get looked at.

Lots of dropped calls and buggy features

Poor. I just want calls to not get dropped. How have zoom figured out voice + video but openphone cannot figure out just voice alone?

Pros

User interface is nice. It's easy to use and designed well the core function does not work well

Cons

Lots of dropped calls. The number one function is to answer calls and it cannot get that right. Loads of bugs generally, and the development team don't care. It's been months of me reporting issues and getting no fixes. The "do no disturb" feature for example just does not work, I keep getting calls when it's turned on, and my team members, the people who should be taking the calls, are not seeing the calls come through even though they should be.

Great for business. Lots of options. Some slight call lag.

I really like Open Phone. It makes it easy to take phone calls with multiple numbers on my computer or cell phone. Easy to forward, text message, etc.

Pros

I love how easy it is to use Open Phone. It's easy to set up, and reasonably priced.

Cons

There is a bit of a lag on my phone calls. It's not brutal, but enough to be noticeable. It has gotten better over time, but still exists.

They are working on integrations, but I am still waiting for a native Integromat/Make integration. They need to contact Integromat/Make to set this up, but haven't done so. Not sure why.

Not worth the difficulty

Less than acceptable. Set up was problematic, could figure out what took so long. Promises to get connection soon..which is about two weeks. Even more a problem when leaving, they couldn’t care about requirement to have the number ported in a week.

Pros

The system worked fine once the number is ported, which took about two weeks. Lucky I didn’t need a phone right away. Receiving and making call functions worked as long as you have internet connection

Cons

The time to get set up and more the time to get my number ported to a cellular service provider when I needed it. About three weeks to get the number released, two weeks after the requirement for a phone for work was needed. They say they will reply within 48 hours, but is more like 48 to 60 hours...sometime in the second day after my inquiry. No urgency or proficiency in getting the routine administrative process of porting the number to another provider. They would rather you don’t have phone access let a paying customer leave when their service is no longer required. They promise to get the job done, but it will be a long wait, if it happens at all.

Great 2nd line phone service for business

Had problems initially porting my number due to my problems from my previous service. I worked with one tech person at OpenPhone who was proactive, communicative, and really made me feel like my business was super important to them. The service is crystal clear, and everyone I've reached out with has been responsive very quick. Love the new services that keep being introduced, especially the auto transcript of voicemail and call recordings. Havent used the auto attendant, but plan to soon. So many features all for one low price. OpenPhone is a great business partner to have.

Pros

separate contacts lists, windows desktop app, many features with new ones constantly being rolled out, and all for a very reasonable monthly charge are why I love Openphone, but what truly separates them from others I've tried has been the support I received during implementation and porting my number.

Cons

The only thing I'd like to see is the ability to set a (or for it to have its own) custom ringtone

Reasons for Choosing OpenPhone

Dingatone was full of nonsense, like it was designed for teenagers (maybe it was). The worst was a game they had where other customers could go in and steal your credits. Not a good service for business use. What annoyed me was, like most other low cost phone apps, was it requiring to connect to your phone contact list. Its important to me to keep my business and personal contacts separate.

Reasons for Switching to OpenPhone

What initially sold me was the ability to keep a separate contacts list for my business contacts out of my phone's regular contacts app, along with a reasonable cost

Powerful, reliable, simple to use! It works.

We needed an uncomplicated phone. Previously we were paying too much for what we needed and the system was overly complex. Openphone has been easy to work with from the get-go. The customer support has been fantastic whenever we've had a feature request or run into issues (rare). Highly recommend for small businesses and solopreneurs to separate personal phones from business.

Pros

Quick and easy setup. Excellent customer support including new feature requests. Works very well on a daily basis.

Cons

As one we run two businesses with the same team in the same industry, initially we were hoping to use the same phone number and then redirect to the correct company. There was a small workaround initially however a feature has since been added to allow us to do this without a "hack".

Racist company

Not the best, I dont recommend this company that only accepts white-looking (that doesnt necessarily mean those people are fully caucasian either).

Pros

- I actually thought it'd be a nice company but...

Cons

So we have applied to get a number from Open Phone, one of my business partner who's originally Chinese was refused while I was accepted. We both used the same IPs to sign up and bank card, so the only thing that differed was our names. (we tried setting up an account with both of our identities as the first account was put automatically under review one after the other and we genuinely thought there was a mistake but that part was alright , I've no problem with that).
Thank you Open Phone for openly showing your racism and contempt towards people of other ethnicities. We can't let them get away with things like this especially as service providers.

Easy-to-use business phone for calling US clients!

Overall, it is simple, easy and with a user-friendly interface, in terms of reliability, there were days that the software would crash, but customer service is quick to attend to your concerns. It runs much faster/better on the phone than in the computer (requires more bandwidth).

Pros

I can see if my colleagues are on a call, there is an option for recording calls which is essential for call reviews, transferring calls is possible as well.Text messaging runs smoothly, although if using the desktop version, it doesn't include much emojis. Voicemail also transcribes to a text with the recorded voicemail which is great!

Cons

My colleagues and I tried to set up the caller id feature, which is an impressive feature, since we do a lot of inbound calls to families but after setting it up, databases can't pick up our caller id still, and some clients do not answer our phone calls because of it. Have also been notified by some clients that sound quality is bad at times, but this can be due to varied factors.

Great product providing a professional and efficient presence

OpenPhone allows me to have one phone number that follows me where I am with no fuss that remains as my 'office' number, even if answered from my personal mobile.

Pros

OpenPhone allows me to stay in contact with clients and vendors no matter where I am, without having to give out my personal mobile number. This gives me the flexibility to not be tied to my desk.

It also allows me to distinguish between personal and work calls.

The apps have even more features (at no extra cost) than my traditional phone provider offers.

Cons

There are some features that come to ios first. I primarily use Android.

Perfect phone solution for small businesses

Pros

OpenPhone takes away all the complications and hurdles in getting a phone solution for a small business. I figured it shouldn't be too difficult to get a US business phone number and start messaging/calling clients but none of the options on the market made that possible, never mind affordable. Fortunately I discovered OpenPhone and the process was very simple to get started!

Cons

I'm looking forward to the Android app being as stable as the iPhone app, but it's still very usable :)

Business phone for SMBs

Pros

The native app is fanatic. Love the cadence of new releases like recording inbox and a Mac app. Voice quality is excellent and I don’t need to give out my personal number for clients and prospects.

Cons

A central admin console and centralized bulling

Happy with the switch

Pros

This software allowed me to merge my VOIP number along with my texting package, all at the same price I was currently paying just for texting. It also allows utilization of my cell phone for work calls as well as personal via their app.

Cons

Changing ring settings is not intuitive. I have also had issues with app override problems. IE, personal calls start ringing while I'm on a work call.

Pros

Being able to use it from any computer to text clients. Having its own address book is huge.

It’s always worked great for me, messaging and call quality. I have nothing bad to say.

Best I’ve Found

I am a previous user of Line2 and in my opinion OpenPhone stands out on top. Not only in reliability and features . But the customer service is number one!!!!!

Pros

I love the interface. The integration of the app into multiple platforms. The ease of use. And most of all the reliability of the app.

Cons

Blocked numbers notifications coming through even after being placed on the block list.

Best light phone system out there

Great phone system that connects teams and organizes clients at a great price!

Pros

This is an extremely affordable phone system that has a light crm that comes with it. It will only get better in the future but very impressed with what I get vs. how much I pay.

Cons

I wish it had the ability to integrate with other CRM systems. But other than that it’s a great system !

Cons

There really aren’t any cons to the service. They keep adding new features to the system that are useful and easy to use.

I was so looking for a service like this that was easy to use, reliable and ability to add and and manage multiple numbers and this is it

Pros

Easy to use like GV but with way more features and easy to add and navigate multiple numbers

Cons

Wish I would bulk select the log as read (done) or not read instead of clicking each one plus want a click 2 option on browser

Great Product!

OpenPhone is simple, affordable, and well organized. Customer service is great. I like how texts and phone calls are in one place. And I like being able to have an app on my phone for business, so that I can separate business calls/texts from personal calls/texts.

Pros

I love how simple, affordable, and well organized it is. OpenPhone has really helped my business.

Cons

The only issue I ever have is if I'm in an area with bad internet service and I can't make calls/texts/etc. But, that is not really an issue with OpenPhone, more with my actual service provider.

Pros

I was able to transfer our landline number to be my Open Phone number.

Cons

Excellent Customer Service This Past Year - Answer all questions

Allows customers to call from around the world

Pros

This software is quite configurable and the company is very willing to consider requests for changes. From a simple start that I read about on "FlipBoard" to a more advanced package, they have grown well and with grace.

Cons

Initially, it was limited, but that quickly changed. Need to change the ringer to something I will actually *hear* when on the road.

No support at all

Terrible support, feels like I got scammed.

Pros

Easy when you are getting the subscription

Cons

They show the customer support number but when you call they say "we don't offer phone live support". Then I emailed for support and they are saying "we are on a much-needed break, contact us after Jan 3rd". And here I have a critical issue where I am not getting calls which is impacting me severely.

Best solution to for business calls. Amazing for internationals doing business in US

Great.

Pros

Easy to use, same as your ordinary phone. I have my US and national number on the same phone and makes it super convenient to work with US customers while I am outside of US.

Cons

Nothing big really. Sometimes I don’t hear the call and find it later in missed calls, but it can be just me.

No customer support

My experience has been very frustrating. I would not recommend using them. Their technical support is almost non-existent. I was trying to port a number into Openphone.

Pros

I did not use this product because I could not get it to work.

Cons

There is no telephone customer support. You can only have customer support by email which takes 24-48 hours for a reply. After not getting responses to my requests for help, I found out there were no refunds.

Easiest way to have a number just for business!

I'm a big fan of the product!

Pros

I've been using OpenPhone for almost a year, and it was a great product when I started using it and continues to get better every month. The team ships new features consistently and is always quick to respond with customer support when I have questions.

The team is really good about talking with their users to get insight about what is working, and what could be improved with the product. They are open to feedback and take it into account when building out new iterations of the product.

OP is the easiest way to have a separate a business number from my personal number, and I love having a different area code for my OP number, compared to my personal number!

Cons

There isn't anything that needs improving on the product, given the way I use it.

Great Product

Overall, OpenPhone is use-friendly and a great product to have for your business.

We purchased OpenPhone as a secondary option for our business. The text messaging feature has been essential in our everyday operations.

Cons

I would like the option to use our current number through OpenPhone without having to have it ported over.

Great from the start! Fantastic Customer Support!

We use a toll free number in our advertising, and a local number as well. This keeps our private cell numbers, well, private.

Pros

Ease of use - clarity of calls (dependant on internet connection, but when using data on our mobile phone, works great)

A wide, wide range of phone numbers available.

Cons

A bit mysterious to setup at first, not unlike other software.

Best Business Phone Solution for Freelancers and Small Agencies

OpenPhone allows me to use my personal cell phone, but have a secondary phone number just for business. It allows me to set up business hours, so I am not receiving calls at all hours of the day and night.

Pros

Very easy to set up and use. OpenPhone cost is similar to competitors, except that you get way more features, and the dashboard is much better.

Cons

I don't have anything negative to say about OpenPhone at this time. I have not needed to use customer support yet, so that is an area I can't speak on.

Alternatives Considered

Google Voice

Reasons for Switching to OpenPhone
