Data Analytics Powers Production

IBM SPSS Statistics has turned into the workhorse for production analysis at the company. It has solid statistical tools that actually help us to notice patterns in our production data that usually go unnoticed. These two factors are reliability of the software and strong support infrastructure, coming from IBM's experience. We selected IBM SPSS Statistics mainly for its effective analysis of a large amount of data that characterizes the manufacturing industry, as well as for its efficiency in predictive modeling.

Pros

There is a robust time series analysis, which is very useful for diagnosing seasonal production issues and trends in forecasting when maintenance will be required for the equipment. The big data compatibility of the software in regard to variable relationships fostered by the software complemented by the enhanced visualization tools proves to be a valuable assistance in the aspect of production optimization analysis.

Cons

The general interface for custom script integration could be better realized. Possibility to opt for a certain type of report is not very gigantic. Continuous data integration is performed when more additional configuration is needed.

IBM SPSS has been near perfect statistics software for most of its mature life

I have used (IBM) SPSS mostly through university accounts, since version 10. I have a colleague who claims even version 6 was complete enough for his purposes. My usage generally skipped a version or 2 at a time. Since version 18, I believe IBM SPSS is indeed good enough for every need. My personal feeling was always satisfied with a touch of frustration.

Pros

It is a very complete package. It has a robust scripting language which makes repeatability of an analysis very possible, if the original analyzer so intends. There is also possibility to interact with R and many plugins. The plugin management system is easy to navigate.

Cons

Menu system is a little confusing. Price would be an issue for individual users. Licensing is slightly complicated. The base unit, although covering a lot of options will surely fall short for many individuals.

Top Quality, but Overpriced in Today's Market

SPSS is a pleasure to use, especially for beginners.

Pros

The SPSS user interface is extremely easy to use, giving you access to almost all of its features. A few things, like slicing a complex interaction in ANOVA, must be done using SPSS code, but that is a small minority.

Cons

SPSS is overpriced in today's market. There are now free and open-source packages that do almost everything SPSS does. For example, SPSS with all its add-ons runs over $20K per copy. BlueSky Statistics is very similar in ease of use and power, but with all its add-ons and tech support starts at $500. Plus the free version is also very capable. If you don't need extensive data management capabilities, JASP and jamovi also offer a solid set of statistical methods. A quick Google search will take you to detailed reviews of those and others.

Analyze your data with statistical theories

I used SPSS for research projects in Master of Business Administration. In the beginning data analyzing and learning the use of software was a time consuming process. I understood that this software can also used for organizational data analysis where sufficient data is available. However , the software lacks intelligence to select correct data out of the imported data therefore data cleansing is important.

Pros

Data can be easily imported to the software from data bases and Excel. Once the data is imported the graphical depiction of the data can be used to identify the behavior of data. After understanding the behavior of the data the data can be analyzed using the available statistical models. The most suitable statistical model for the data can be finalized in the process of data analysis. The software has a broad range of statistical models build on linear and regression theories and models. The software is easy to use with an unsophisticated menu driven interface. Anyone with basic mathematical knowledge can use the software for the analysis. An expert in statistics is not needed as data analyzing consists of few simple steps. However , 3- 4 weeks is needed to properly familiarize with the software. Basically four steps can be identified in using this software. First step is importing data , second step is selection of a procedure , third step is selection of a variable for data analyzing and fourth step is generating of results.

Cons

The efficiency of the software decreases when the size of data increases. Therefore, this can be a major drawback when used in the sectors such as health care. SPSS has 2 main windows one depicting data and the other depicting results. Therefore the software is too simple with limited windows. The software is very similar to excel and most of the results obtained in SPSS also can be obtained in excel by complex calculations .This is comparatively expensive compared to the similar software. The data should be cleaned before analysis in order to generate correct results.

Review of SPSS

When I first used the program, it was very difficult and almost impossible to learn. However, as I spent time in it, I began to understand and comprehend. Ultimately, the program allows for a great experience if well learned. I think it is necessary to learn this program in order to be a good researcher.

Pros

I like to be able to see the analyzes I have done in the past with a single click, making it easy for me to switch to a new analysis while I am analyzing the data most in the software. At the same time, the program works very fast and I can see all the data analysis I want on a single screen. Again, by allowing the SPSS-Macro extension, I find it successful to do the analysis formats developed by Hayek. While doing this, I do not experience any freezing in the program, it runs smoothly. In this sense, it provides great convenience in terms of coding and processing of my data, as well as during analysis. Similarly, allowing graphics to be made in the program allows me to visualize the results of the analyzes I have obtained.

Cons

The lack of language support in the program is a disadvantage for me. Therefore, the only downside about the program is that you cannot access the software in my own language.

A sports car product

I've used SPSS since it was only available on mainframe computers and so I am quite comfortable with the software. I can move data in and out of the system. I use SPSS for evaluation but always move to something else for visualization.

Pros

SPSS is a feature rich product that has evolved to serve professional statisticians. It can do almost everything you could imagine. The new integration with R makes it even more capable. If you are trying to perform advanced modeling it can do it. It accepts data in most formats and can export data with ease.

Cons

Like a sports car, it is not easy. The menu system is not intuitive and options can be fussy. After years of working with it, I sometimes still end up searching for the test I want. The graphics are widely accepted in academic publications but are far behind those for the more commercial press. Tables often must be reworked to meet the standards necessary for any quality report.
The software comes in several flavors. This is great for saving money but often leaves people wanting features or tests only available in the next upgrade. Given the high cost of the software -- particularly for business customers -- an upgrade can be prohibitive.

The best tool for obtaining accurate and reliable results for statistical analyzes

SPSS has helped automate the statistical analysis process, eliminated cumbersome manual calculations and enabled us to obtain accurate and reliable results.

Pros

SPSS is one of the best statistical analysis tools that I have dealt with, and it gives you accurate results that you can trust. SPSS provides multiple options for importing data, where I can easily import the data I want to analyze from Excel. I like the simple method in which Regression is analyzed and how the independent and dependent variables are entered. I also like how we can simply copy the results tables and send them to MS Word and Excel to complete the reports we are working on.

Cons

It's hard to find unwanted things, it's easy to use and just needs a little practice of the operations you want to perform. The availability of educational materials about all the operations that SPSS performs enables users to gain a greater understanding of the analytics they are working on.

User-friendly and gets the job done

I learned how to work with SPSS when I was getting my Master's and thought it was super user-friendly, as you don't need to know how to code to use it. I have transferred the use to my daily work and I find it to be the most effective statistical analyses software to meet my needs. I tried Python and R, but SPSS is still the easiest and most intuitive tool out there.

Pros

SPSS is super user-friendly; you can get started super quickly, even if you do not know anything about syntaxes and coding. I particularly like the ability to create new syntaxes, save them, and use the same code for several similar studies.

Cons

I am a big fan of the software for data processing, but data visualization and reporting are not its strongest features. Exporting the data is often required to build analyses and reports.

The industry leader for ages (...and it shows)

Once I learned how to use SPSS to do what I needed it to do, it became an invaluable tool and a critical part of my workflow--indeed, trying to learn other statistical software packages after figuring out SPSS felt a bit like trying to "unlearn" how to ride a bike. It does have its quirks and flaws, mainly surrounding its UI, but these are literally cosmetic.

Pros

The range of statistical tests and techniques available from the get-go in SPSS is unmatched, and there are additional modules that can be added to expand the software's abilities. It becomes relatively intuitive the more you use it, and its export options for the results it calculates are quite robust.

Cons

SPSS is quite intimidating if you've never used it before, and without guidance, it may feel almost impossible to get started with it. Perhaps its biggest problem is its ongoing legacy support for previous versions--in other words, IBM periodically seems to slap a new front end on the software, but with just a click or two, you immediately encounter dialog boxes and windows that look like they belong on a machine running Windows XP (...or earlier!). The overreliance on pop-up windows makes the interface even more dated and clunky. Honestly, IBM should completely gut the software and start over from scratch, but presumably that's too big of a task, which leaves us with this black box that has been coated with dozens of layers of proverbial paint.

The more you work with it, the more you learn. My favorite capability of this program is the superfast correlation table creation. IBM SPSS: Data Analysis and Management for Graduate Research

IBM SPSS is the leading data analysis software. It was really a major support in our graduate research in the fields of big data algorithms and cloud computing.

Pros

I have used SPSS to carry data analysis and reporting for my security and cloud computing research to support the different statistical analysis and management for my simulations. I like the variable support in SPSS that gives a better data view of the samples in one Spreadsheet. The variable creation process is highly automated that makes the deployment of the statistical model much more facilitated. Moreover, the variable configuration process is very intuitive and resembles basic relational entities in RDBMSes. By the way, I integrated SPSS with prominent RDBMSes such as Oracle and MySQL.

Cons

The main limitation that occurred is the performance degradation when loading large data sets. Though, this wasn't easily replicated, we believe that the size of the data set could be the main factor resulting in the lags we experienced. The SPSS learning curve is steep and it requires a lot of training to make the user acquainted to use it effectively.

Researcher's opinion about SPSS

Since my training, I have used other software packages (JASP, R, Stata), and although I would mostly pick those over SPSS, I would still heartily recommend this software package to others. Especially to people who are less experienced with statistical reporting.

Pros

I learnt statistics using SPSS, and for that it will always be a product that has personal significance for me. It is very user friendly and the UI and ribbon, although dated, allows inexperienced users to quickly understand and navigate its functionality. For simple statistical operations, SPSS is great.

Cons

For statisticians who are more experienced, SPSS will likely feel sluggish. It does not have the kind of customisation that other packages or programming languages have, e.g. R, and it can feel slow.

Powerful Data Analysis Tool

Overall, IBM SPSS Statistics is a solid choice for data analysis, but it's not perfect. You'll need to weigh the pros and cons and decide if it's the right fit for you.

Pros

I found IBM SPSS Statistics to be an effective tool for analyzing data. It offers a wide range of statistical techniques and tools that allows me to delve deep into my data and uncover meaningful insights. One of the greatest advantages of this software is its user-friendly interface which makes it easy for me to access the tools and features, even as a new user of data analysis. Additionally, the visualization tools are exceptional, enabling me to create various charts and graphs that help me see patterns and trends in my data.

Cons

Now, there are a couple of downsides I least liked about it. First off, it's not exactly cheap. If you're a small organization or just a single user, you might have to fork over a decent chunk of cash to use it. And it's not the most beginner-friendly thing in the world, so you'll probably need to put in a little bit of time to learn how to use all the features. Plus, it's not open source, so that might be a deal breaker for some folks. And finally, it's not as good as R or Python for super advanced analysis.

Open source options are better and free

Pros

SPSS has been around for a very long time, so it's what a whole lot of researchers are most comfortable using, including usually myself, in spite of my criticism of it. It has most of the statistical tests that one needs for my area of research. Things usually work and the GUI interface is accessible to people. But there is also a script output, so one doesn't need to waste time pointing and clicking constantly. These are great features.

Cons

SPSS has been slow to adopt Bayesian testing and I hear that aspect still needs a lot of work. The outputs for any tests are typically quite difficult to read. The visualizations are quite poor / unattractive and not particularly easy to customize. I never publish SPSS-made graphs. Every person I know will use another software program to make data visualizations. SPSS costs money, and there are other open source options out there that are just as good or better. R has been open source for quite some time and has better and more customizable visualizations. It doesn't have a GUI interface, which is a pro of SPSS. But then there are programs like JASP that have GUI interfaces AND Bayesian functions AND scripting and they're free. So it's hard to justify SPSS.

Powerful statistical analysis software

All in all IBM SPSS Statistics is a super solid and reliable solution for your statistical analysis needs and is still my number one choice.

Pros

I am working with IBM SPSS since over 10 years now and never had any serious problem / bug, so it is a super realiable & solid statistical analysis software. It offers a wide range of statistical analysis methods and guides you well through the whole analysis process.

Cons

Some areas/modules of the software are not that easy to understand or as user-friendly as they could be. This I realized, when I introduced the software to a new collegue.

Easy to use Statistical analysis software

Overall, using SPSS with other statistical software like SAS JMP and Excel provides great value. The software is great but surely there is room for improvement

Pros

I Return to mostly because of its data cleaning capability and the ability to save chart templates and reuse. It is flexible for basic statistical analysis though requires an good statistical background to perform sophisticated statistical analysis with it.

Cons

The fact that the software has no algorithms that can help you decide on the right statistical test seems problematic to novices in statistical data analysis. You must know the exact test to perform, the software cannot help you decide

The Best and The Rest

After being introduced to SPSS about 10 years ago I have never used any other similar product. I have even helped colleagues who use a different program with their analyses by saving their data to a USB, using SPSS in my office, and providing them with a hard copy of the results as well as the SPSS input/output data. Typically, they want to know how to get their hands on a copy of SPSS.

Pros

SPSS is a phenomenal resource for data analysis be it for an advanced statistician or a student learning basic research methodology. The program is designed to run very simple analyses (mean, mode, median, SD, T-Tests) to complex theoretical modeling in order to identify and name IV's and DV's. SPSS provides reader-friendly and exhaustive help within the program, as well as live help if needed (which, in my experience is not very often). I love the options that I can add to the output such as graphs, charts, histograms, and what specific data means based on what I want analyzed. Much easier to use that other programs of a similar nature, which means I spend less time asking a colleague in the Math Department if I am using the most appropriate analysis based on the data collected. Also, I appreciate how easy it is to copy and paste tables and images into a text document.

Cons

Until there is a technology that allows one to immediately "download" large and complex bodies of information into the brain, I have little criticism for SPSS. If I am in deep water and do not fully understand what the "Help" section is telling me, I simply step backward until I reach a level that I do understand and move forward from there. Kind of like teaching myself. It is unreasonable to blame a program for my own limitations.

Best stats package with the ease of functionality and mechanism.

My overall experience with SPSS has been great and I strongly recommend it. It is very useful in market research and business analytics industry as most research projects deal with descriptive and multivariate statistical approach. I have been using SPSS for last ten years and it has provided very good functionality with each update and version. Overall I highly recommend this software package.

Pros

Very easy to use. High level functionality and easy to perform mechanisms. Fine way of operations. Can run anything from basic descriptive statistics to high level simulations. Easy to import data in different formats (csv, xls, sav, etc.). Data cleaning process are easily executed which includes missing value imputation, data recoding, and data restructuring. Very functional in running multivariate methods like exploratory factor analysis, ANOVA, linear regression, logistic regression, discriminant analysis, and MANCOVA. Most operations are done through interactive dashboard, which is hassle free. Overall it is a great statistical package to run different analysis at a very affordable price.

Cons

It is tedious to do multiple iterations using SPSS. Syntax functionality is low and lines of codes become exhaustive when you run monte carlo simulations. The most challenging aspect is to run simulations with large data sets. The support provided by the support team doesn't extend beyond technical support. SPSS requires add ons for running the simulations which cost extra to the users. Overall it is deficient in running certain simulations.

SPSS, The efficient statistical software for analysis

With this app, I am able to analyze data and produce actionable results easily and as quickly as possible. Doing research is easy and quick when you have SPSS installed

Pros

SPSS makes it easier to analyze data and report them to audience with diverse backgrounds.
Anyone can use SPSS, even without formal training, because it is not so complex to use. Even if you don't have experience in programming, you will be able to use it. It makes you do analysis in smallest possible time, thus if if you really understand the data you are using. And also know the right commands and inputs.

Cons

In spite of the positive things said about SPSS, It can be a bit costly to use this app as a Researcher. You can really do a lot with this app, however, this can only happen if you really have some understanding of your data and really know what you are doing when running regressions.
